DISCERNMENT COUNSELING

Discernment counseling is a specialized form of counseling designed for couples who are considering the future of their relationship, particularly when one or both partners are uncertain about whether to pursue engaging in couples therapy to save a relationship, or ending a relationship. At A Place to Grow, we offer discernment counseling to provide couples with clarity, understanding, and support as they navigate this challenging and often painful process.

Goals of Discernment Counseling

The primary goal of discernment counseling is to help couples gain clarity and insight into their relationship dynamics, identify underlying issues and concerns, and explore the possibility of improving their relationship through couples therapy together or separation in a safe and supportive environment. Your Therapist will provide guidance and support as you and your partner navigate emotions, fears, and uncertainties, helping them make informed decisions about the future of their relationship.

Process of Discernment Counseling

Discernment counseling typically involves a series (1-5 sessions) of individual and joint sessions with a trained therapist. During these sessions, couples have the opportunity to explore their feelings, concerns, and goals for the future, as well as their reasons for considering engaging in couples therapy to improve their relationship or separation/divorce. Having the space to speak frankly, and openly during individual and conjoint session time allows for each member to explore their own unmet needs, what a relationship worth staying in would look like, and if they see a path forward with their partner.

Individual and Joint Sessions

Discernment counseling includes both individual and joint sessions to allow each partner the opportunity to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns in a safe and confidential space. Individual sessions provide a supportive environment for self-reflection and exploration, while joint sessions facilitate open and honest communication between partners and promote understanding and empathy.

Supportive and Nonjudgmental Approach

Navigating the decision to stay together and begin work on your relationship or separation/divorce can be emotionally challenging and complex. Your therapist will provide a supportive and nonjudgmental environment where you and your partner can explore your options and feelings without pressure or obligation. We respect each partner's perspective and work collaboratively with couples to help them find clarity, understanding, and resolution on their terms.
